About Bressay Development Ltd (BDL)
Bressay Development Ltd is a community‑led enterprise dedicated to securing and sustaining a vibrant future for Bressay: fostering an active, connected, thriving, and resilient community.
BDL manages the Speldiburn Community Hub and Arts Venue, which includes a café, Good As New Shop, artist studios, exhibition space, a community library, and rooms available for hire. The organisation also oversees the Bressay Community Woodland at the Brough Loch, runs regular activities, and publishes a quarterly newsletter to keep island households informed.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Community Energy Development Officer to lead and support our early-stage work considering options for the development of community energy in Bressay.
The initial phase of this post will be funded by the Scottish Government’s Carbon Neutral Islands Scheme (administered by Community Energy Scotland).
BDL is also in active discussions about additional funding to make this a long-term position. It is likely that this would include expanding the scope of the role to include providing support to (and coordinating with) other community development companies in Shetland.
What You Will Do
- Map land ownership on Bressay and liaise with landowners to explore potential sites for community energy projects and/or housing development.
- Continue and expand the BDL household energy survey, identify gaps, and coordinate with Home Energy Scotland to deliver advice, visits, and support.
- Identify domestic and agricultural properties that are potentially suitable for renewable energy installations.
- Collaborate with the Bressay community, Community Energy Scotland, and other partners to scope, assess and advance different project options.
- Support community engagement efforts, ensuring local voices guide project priorities and decisions.
What We Are Looking For
You don’t need to be the expert from day one – but we are looking for a motivated, organised problem‑solver who connects well with people across the community.
We particularly welcome candidates who have:
- A qualification or some experience in energy, engineering or a technical discipline. We would also consider applicants with some background or training in environmental science, geography, planning, community development, or related fields.
- An interest or background in sustainability, renewable energy and community‑led climate initiatives.
- Excellent communication skills.
- An organised approach to data management (some experience with GIS preferred but not essential).
- A connection to Shetland or willingness to be based here.
Support and Opportunities
You’ll join a supportive and collaborative environment, working closely with Bressay Development Ltd, Community Energy Scotland, and the Carbon Neutral Islands Community of Practice. Your efforts will directly contribute to Bressay’s sustainability and Scotland’s net‑zero goals.
